HVAC Condenser Upgrade

Site: Woolworths, Circle on Cavill

ATS Group completed a full HVAC condenser upgrade at Woolworths Circle on Cavill in Surfers Paradise. The project involved the removal of old, deteriorating units and the installation of two new Kirby WRC condensers with enhanced corrosion protection. This work included precise crane operations, lane closure of the Gold Coast Highway and Police traffic management to ensure a seamless changeover. The upgrade included re-commissioning of the condenser control group and fan staging, which now provides improved cooling efficiency and long-term reliability for the facility.

HVAC Compressor Replacement

Site: Woolworths, Lismore Central

ATS Group completed the replacement of two failed HVAC compressors at Woolworths Lismore Central. The project included a refrigerant gas conversion, piping re-work, upgrading TX valves and liquid line solenoid valves. To ensure safe operation of the reconditioned compressors, the control circuit was functionally tested and re-configured, including installation of new motor protection modules and pressure safeties to ensure optimal performance. The team conducted thorough system testing, start-up procedures, and operational checks, resulting in a more reliable and efficient cooling for the store.

Chiller and Control System Repairs

Site: Woolworths Broadwater Metro

ATS Group completed essential repairs at Woolworths Broadwater Metro, including the replacement of one failed compressor and two plate heat exchangers (PHEXs) in the dual-circuit polyvalent chiller. The project involved pipework modifications, system reassembly, and electrical reconnections, along with control strategy adjustments to improve the cooling system’s performance and energy efficiency.

The team integrated the BMS system with the chiller's onboard controller via low-level control and MODBUS HLI communication. The fresh air damper control was also integrated using the store’s CO2 ppm levels, with full sensor calibration performed. Further enhancements were made to the heating circuit, including the replacement of the expansion tank and the external water differential switch. These upgrades, along with comprehensive programming and commissioning, have ensured the system is now operating at peak performance.

HVAC Screw Plant Assessment and Repairs

Site: Woolworths Inala

ATS Group conducted a thorough review and assessment of the HVAC screw plant at Woolworths Inala. The assessment identified several key issues, including a failed lead compressor, insufficient suction line riser velocity, oversized EXVs, and failed refrigerant and oil health checks. Additionally, the lag compressor was found to have leaks, and the entire compressor rack required programming verification and recommissioning.

We replaced the failed compressor, installed new Variable Speed Drives (VSDs) for lead compressors, and reprogrammed the compressor staging for duty/standby operation. The evaporator coils were isolated and reconfigured to improve oil return, and refrigerant was recovered, repaired, and recharged. Filters, gaskets, and seals were replaced, the Emerson controller was updated to integrate the new control strategy, and safety circuits were tested to ensure efficient and reliable operation of the HVAC system. This comprehensive repair and recommissioning process has restored the HVAC system to efficient operation, meeting the cooling demands of the store while optimising energy use.
